Being a leader in the social media landscape, everybody always asks us for a task list for creating a social media campaign. We always try to explain that social media (like SEO) is not so much a list of specific activities but a methodology. Social Media is different than SEO in the way that it is very creative and is built for "shareability", rather than for than optimizing for search engines. Over the weekend I read an article called the 5 Phases of social media marketing.
I thought that this was a really good start to anybody thinking about putting together a social media marketing campaign. I know that our Internet Marketing company has a more granular approach which goes into a lot more detail than the process listed in this article. Our Social Media Marketing Agency walks all of our clients through a 10 step process that we have developed and tested in house. Our process starts with a Discovery session where we grab a baseline set of metrics and set benchmarks for the campaign. We then work with our clients to optimize their current site (or micro site) for the social media campaign. We sit down with our clients and go over the results and competitive intelligence from our previous discovery session and come up with reasonable expectations for the campaign and its budget. With goals, budget, and objective in hand our SMO Specialists get to work putting together a strategy that will engage our client's customers and encourage positive perception of our client's brand. Throughout the implementation of our campaign we monitor progress (both ours and the progress of our client) and report back to our client with our finding. We make necessary tweaks and changes as necessary and continue to perform ongoing activities like reputation management and in depth social media reporting.
A clear and concise strategy done by a top social marketing agency is the only way to ensure that a campaign is successful. I've seen to many campaign (some down by fortune 500 clients) that have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and produced either nothing or have produced negative results. When it comes to social media, leave it to an expert.
